These images treat shorts as part of an outfit rather than an isolated item. Where the outer hem ends, how much of the shorts shows and how far shoes and socks cover the calf together determine the proportions. When the outer layer covers the hips or even the shorts' hem, its opening needs to reveal inner clothing and legs, while less bulky footwear works well. Knee-length shorts with long socks, heavy shoes or tall boots add weight below; the top's length and width then need to respond.
